SPC Rounds off Annual 150,000-ton C5 Separation Device

The Chemical Research Institute of SPC has recently finished the whole process of the annual 150,000-ton C5 separation device. Four qualified products including polymerized isoprene, chemical isoprene, pentadiene, dicyclopentadiene have been produced. The successful start-up indicates that the largest C5 chemical industry development and production base in China has stood out in SPC and SPC's C5 separation technology has reached the international advanced level. 

C5 is a by-product from the ethylene production. One ton of C5 comes out for producing every 10 tons of ethylene. A series of refined chemical materials such as isoprene and pentadiene could be made by separating and refining C5. The refined chemical materials can widely apply to rubber, cosmetics, farm insecticide, vitamin E, traffic paint as well as essence and spice. 

Since the late 1980s, SPC has invested more than RMB0.1 billion in the independent development for the comprehensive utilization of C5 separation, one of the state key projects for the "Eighth Five-year Plan". In 1991, SPC constructed the industrial test device of the annual 25,000-ton C5 separation. Besides, SPC smoothly developed the integrated technology of C5 separation, with the full proprietary intellectual property owned by SINOPEC. The integrated technology was awarded the Level II State Award of Scientific Research Advancement.

So far, SPC's C5 industry has been on a steady and sound track after the continuous development and industrialization in the recent 20 years, especially the recent 10 years, as well as the enriched experience in relevant production and operation. Thanks to the consistent technical research, the massive new technologies and facilities as well as the innovative alteration, the C5 device's annual treatment capability has risen to 75,000 tons from the original 25,000 tons. Plus the 150,000-ton-grade alteration device which has been put into operation, SPC is capable of treating a total of 225,000-ton C5.

For the comprehensive utilization and development of C5, SPC has got 103 patent application numbers and 52 patents. Besides, it has been awarded 22 items of honors and prizes above the provincial and ministerial level. At present, 100% use of C5 resources has come true in SPC, with about 80% for refined chemical products and the rest for recycling use of raw materials for ethylene-cracking.
